Collective Genius

This first pastel art piece was born out of a week long retreat in Kumano, Japan, known as the GenKi Nurse Seminar.  Riding on my excitement for this new art medium and as a way to process my daily life through artistic perceptions, I’ve started the Pastel Art 100 day challenge project today!  Please join me on the journey!

Kumano Kodo

A pastel art inspired by the walk on Kumano Kodo (a world heritage site). The ancient stone steps were covered with deep moss green, which created a beautiful contrast with the moist earth and the surrounding forest.

It was also a day that my dream of walking the Kodo with my dear teacher Koyama-sensei.

Anticipation

The first image entitled “Anticipation”, came through on the morning of day 1 as we drove down Interstate 5 on our way to the workshop. It was just before sunrise when I noticed the beautiful morning sky radiating with a mixture of grey and salmon pink clouds.  The sky appeared to be reflecting our excitement and anticipation for the class.  I felt a gentle tension in the air as I looked toward the sky with quiet anticipation of what was to come.

Realization

The second image was inspired on the morning of Day 2 while driving down I-5 on the way to our workshop.  Having left about 15 minutes later than the previous day, we were greeted with another beautiful sunrise from the same sky we saw just one day before.  This day the image again reflected our mood as our hearts were filled with gratitude for all that was unfolding.  I named the second piece, “Realization”.

As these images might evoke different interpretations, I humbly share my own: “To face the unknown with genuine anticipation and courage, is to realize that you are always supported to walk your path.  No matter how many uncertainties you face in your life, the sun will always rise in the morning regardless of how many clouds there are in the sky.”

May you be GenKi and supported on your path!

Consensual Leadership

As stated eloquently by Linda Kohanov in Way of the Horse (2007), “Consensual leadership is not a job description, it’s an improvisation.  To be confident in your own dreams and talents while remaining responsive to the needs and gifts of others, you must check your ego at the gate.”

This Consensual Leadership art which reminds us that it’s not competition, but rather collaboration that is the true foundation for leading the future!

Mother Ocean & Sun

A pastel art inspired by the sunrise in Kumano.

After experiencing the another beautiful sunrise from the ocean in Kumano, the image came through with a message, “the sun is birthed by the ocean.” – all is one…
